On Saturday 8 March 2025 the Society will visit Epsom College, the school where Hugh Walpole was a schoolmaster in 1908. His experiences during his time there inspired his novel Mr Perrin and Mr Traill, published a couple of years later. We will see the settings of the novel, the surviving records from Walpole’s time at the college, and, most importantly, the celebrated hat and umbrella stand that gave rise to the central episode of the novel. Our visit has been arranged by Epsom College Archivist and Society member Rebecca Worthy, to whom we are most grateful.
