The Hugh Walpole Society is pleased to announce the publication of Red Amber and Other Stories, the first new volume of uncollected short stories by Hugh Walpole for 75 years.

The twelve stories gathered together in this volume originally appeared in popular magazines and literary periodicals between 1910 and 1941, and, although they contain some of Walpole’s most entertaining and compelling writing in the genre of shorter fiction, none have been reprinted until now. They are therefore likely to be unfamiliar to all but the most dedicated of Walpole enthusiasts.

The short stories in the collection are: ‘Giving Up’, ‘Monsieur Félicité’, ‘The Adventure of the Riotous Children’, ‘The Critic’, ‘The Dog and the Dragon in Reminiscence’, ‘Red Amber’, ‘Miss Finchley’s Hour’, ‘The Green Shining Tree’, ‘The Brother’, ‘Mother’s a Pity’, ‘Snow on the Hills’, and ‘Half Way Upstairs’.

Red Amber and Other Stories features an introduction by Society member and founder of Grayswood Press, George Gorniak, which examines Walpole’s reputation as a short-story writer, as well as explanatory notes on each story by Society Chairman Nicholas Redman. The original magazine illustrations are also reproduced.
